Home Baked: Dog Treats

As soon as you realise just how easy home baked dog treats are to make, it becomes a bit addictive. Note to self: make sure to limit what you allow pup to have; these are strictly treats! As a non baker the real joy for me in making these is that A) whatever I bake Baloo wolfs up B) they don’t need to look remotely Mary Berry friendly!

For this recipe we’re using lean bacon and spinach. Emphasis on the lean! For dogs bacon should be treated as an absolute special treat and not for daily consumption. I know, I know those childhood cartoons we all loved with the butcher’s dog, they all lied! Bacon is an incredibly rich and fatty food with a high salt content. For many dog’s stomach if consumed in high quantities it can be hard for them to digest and may cause pancreatitis. For this recipe I’ve adapted one I found on Tails.com except I’ve reduced the bacon to more of dash/hint for flavour rather than a bulk ingredient. We’ve various doggy treat recipes on the blog so make sure to explore!

Ingredients

  • 50g cooked spinach
  • 20g diced, lean bacon
  • 30g grated carrot
  • 135g rice flour
  • 1 egg

Why not try grinding down your dogs daily kibble into a powder and using that instead of the rice flour. Remember these are occasional treats so, this batch should last you a while.

Method

  • Pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees C
  • Take all your ingredients and place into a mixing bowl
  • Mix until you have a nice gloopy mixture
  • Line a tray with baking paper
  • In even table spoon portions begin spooning your mixture on to the tray
  • Bake for 20 minutes

You doggos are definitely going to want you to thank us so, why not post your doggy treats with the tag #BalooAndTheBoo
