Recipe: Homemade bread

Right now we’re all having to stretch the pantry, to make those much needed basics like bread last! Here’s a recipe for quick, homemade bread. Not only is this flatbread recipe easy to follow, it’s also vegan!

Homemade bread can be a bit of a ball ache. And as much as I love to cook, the science of baking has always overwhelmed me. However, for this homemade bread all you need is 4 ingredients and zero proving time.

Ingredients:

  • 200g/7oz plain or wholemeal flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 100ml/3½fl oz warm water
  • 2 tbsp oil (olive, sunflower or vegetable), plus extra for cooking

Method:

Begin by mixing in your dry ingredients and then slowly drizzle in your water, mixing as you go.

Next knead in the oil. The bread is actually very similar to making kids homemade play dough, we actually divide up a small amount for the kids to play with. It’ll keep them entertained while you cook. The flat bread dough can actually be cooked straight away. Although, we prefer to let it rest a while (15-30 mins), for best results.

At this point you can either divide the dough up into balls and then flatten. Sprinkle a light coating of flour on each side before putting into a heated flat/frying pan. Cook for 5 minutes, or until slightly crisp and brown. Alternatively use it as a pizza base.

We think our homemade bread is perfect for souvlaki, gyro or a chip and salad wrap. Our favourite flat bread meal to make is Yiortoulou: Homemade flat bread layered with yogurt and then topped with meatballs in a tomato sauce!
